Digestive Issues

Digestive Issues

Food is such a source of excitement and pleasure for our dogs so it can be easy to forget about keeping an eye on their digestive health.

Understanding your dog’s digestion and what’s ‘normal’ for them when it comes to bowel movements and other bodily functions helps you quickly spot if something isn’t right, so you can help support them back to full vitality.

You are what you eat – so is your dog!

What do digestive issues look like?

Your dog’s digestive system is fairly hardy, but it’s a good idea to monitor their appetite and their bowel movements as these are very good indicators of your dog’s overall health and wellbeing.

  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Excess gas or flatulence
  • Lethargy and depression
  • Changes in stool consistency/colour
  • Straining when passing stools
  • Blood or mucus in the stools
  • Eating ‘non-food’ items
  • Abdominal pain or bloat
  • Fever

Ways to help your dog with digestive issues

Step 1 – Identify if the issue needs veterinary intervention.

Sometimes the causes of digestive upsets may be as simple as a dog developing intolerances to food or eating garbage, to something more severe, such as bacterial, viral or parasitic infections and the presence of disease. Digestive issues can point to problems in the intestines, or in wider body systems, so any concerns should be seen by a vet in the first instance.

If your dog has less than ideal digestion, have large stools for their size, or are very gassy, then looking holistically at your dog’s wellbeing is a good first step and may not fall within your vets field of expertise. To get to the root cause of the issue you may need to support your dogs whole body system to find relief.

Step 2 – Make changes to their lifestyle to reduce the issue

In many cases, digestive issues can be vastly improved with a change in diet, especially if they are struggling with food intolerances or allergies. A ‘clean’ diet, free from preservatives, colourings or other chemicals, and avoiding starchy carbohydrates as much as is possible is often key to good digestive health.  If you aren’t sure how best to approach this for your dog then a Dog Food Review will help you understand what’s in your dog’s current food, and what they might actually need for optimum health. The review will also help you understand about pre-and pro-biotics to support good digestion and create a healthy gut microbiome.

You can help your dog’s digestion with gentle herbs to help soothe their discomfort, help release gas build ups, ease cramps and reduce inflammation in the gut. Having access to all the range of herbs that may be required, and knowing which your dog needs is expensive and complex, but during a Herbal Self-Medication session, your dog can choose from the wide range of detox herbs they need and help you identify what you need to offer to support them longer-term.

Last, but not least, reduce any stress in the humans and dogs in the household. Emotional stress is a big trigger for digestive conditions. Relaxing therapies such as Reiki can help your dog to really relax and let go of any emotional traumas that are triggering recurring digestive issues.
