Stress & Anxiety

In small, appropriate doses stress is a normal, healthy emotion that puppies and older dogs need to learn to deal with, but it can build into unhealthy anxiety.

If disproportionate levels of stress or anxiety are left unsupported, a dog can develop anxiety disorders which could lead to behaviour problems in the future.

What does anxiety look like?

  • Urinating or defecating in the house
  • Drooling or panting
  • Destructive behaviour
  • Depression
  • Excessive barking or whining
  • Pacing and restlessness
  • Repetitive or compulsive behaviours
  • Sucking or chewing on legs or paws
  • Aggression towards the trigger or someone who comes between the dog and the thing they are nervous of.

Fear-related anxiety can be caused by loud noises, strange people or animals, visual stimuli like hats or umbrellas, new or strange environments, specific situations — like the vet’s surgery or car rides — or surfaces like grass or wood floors. Although some dogs may only have brief reactions to these kind of stimuli, they may affect nervous dogs more.

Separation anxiety is estimated to affect around 14 percent of dogs. Dogs with separation anxiety are unable to find comfort when they are left alone or separated from their family members. This anxiety often manifests itself in undesirable behaviours, such as urinating and defecating in the house, whining or barking or destroying furniture and furnishings when left alone. The damage is usually located around entry and exit points, like doorways and windows.

Dogs in a state of heightened anxiety are also at risk of harming themselves if they attempt to break out of dog crates, windows, and even doors which can result in painful injuries and expensive veterinary treatments.

Ways to help your dog with anxiety

Step 1 – Understand exactly what your dog is anxious about and why.

If this is not clear from their behaviour, then an Animal Communication Session may help them to explain the reasons for their reactions, and what might help them feel more relaxed in that situation.

Animal Communication works by making an intuitive connection with your dog so that I can ask them questions and hear answers from them as to what might help. I can’t just tell your dog to relax, but I may be able to glean what changes need to be made to help them to feel more comfortable, or identify therapies that they feel would offer them more support.

Step 2 – Make changes to the routine to help them cope

Implement the changes your dog needs to help them feel more relaxed with the thing that is causing stress. You may need to change your routine, relocate the dog to a new place in the house.

If your dog’s anxiety is very profound then speaking to your vet in the first instance is advisable, as there may be another cause for the symptoms such as undiagnosed pain. If the vet gives the all-clear then providing relaxing therapies such as Reiki or Herbal Self-Medication can add an extra level of emotional support as you implement your environmental changes.
